My background provides a strong multidisciplinary foundation for my work across diverse fields. My career spans extensive private and academic sectors as public health specialist with keen interest on environmental, occupational and mining issues in South Africa. Over the years, I have gained in-depth expertise addressing the intricate challenges faced by these sectors, particularly in the South African context, where the intersections of mining, health, and the environment play a crucial role in shaping policies and practices.
I serve as an Extraordinary Lecturer at both the University of Pretoria (UP) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ). This role allows me to blend my multidisciplinary background in public health, law, and business.
My academic contributions include authoring over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles focusing on issues such as mining, climate change, occupational health risks, climate change, environmental degradation and health, broader socio-economic impacts of mining, offering evidence-based insights that inform both industry practices and public policy. I have participated in various media interviews, including radio and television appearances, to discuss issues related to air quality, pollution and health. I have written several newspaper articles on environmental and health issues. I have mentored 10 master’s students and 2 doctoral students to the successful completion of their degrees.
In 2013 I was awarded the prestigious EUROSA scholarship to undertake a research year at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and nominated to represent the African continent in the 2015 Kyoto Global Conference.
I am a member of the Institute of Directors in South Africa. I wrote and passed all the prescribed modules for becoming a non-executive director and have acquired experience in board governance and leadership.
